Have you ever wondered what types of sports will survive in the future, sports which will be played on other planets in space colonies? How about in orbiting space hotels, or space stations? How about in long-range cargo ships traveling through space to other planets? It might take them 10 months to get to the next nearest planet, Mars for instance or perhaps 10 years to get to a planet which is near the outside of our solar system. That's a lot of time, and the crew will obviously be well compensated for their journey, but how will they spend their time?
What will they do? Will they write novels, play card games, and engage in various sport activities? What type of sport activities? What types of sports might they play on a cargo ship, a spacecraft that is extremely long, with large corridors - how about Archery? Sure, why not, and have you ever considered the future of archery in space? Chances are you've never considered this, but perhaps you might wish to engage your mind and consider why archery makes the most sense.
It's not easy to play a sport in zero gravity, but without gravity the arrows will go much straighter, and they will be much more accurate. In fact they will remain accurate to the point where the arrow will go exactly where it's pointed, and thus it will not deviate much. No wind to worry about and no gravity to pull the arrow down. Along with a good eye and steady nerves archers will benefit from stronger shoulder, back and arm muscles. Adding a proper strength training program to your archery fitness training is a great idea. As you get stronger it will allow you to use a bow with increased draw. This will lead to a better flight trajectory for the arrow. In will also help you maintain good balance and keep you steady as you aim, leading to better archery results. If you are a bow hunter it will help in many ways, both in the archery aspect as well as hiking and carrying large game. Strength training can also help you decrease the chance of joint and tendon injury that can develop from repeated shooting.

It goes without saying then that the string after a while will eventually need replacing.
So how do you know when your string needs replacing? Here are some signs to watch for that will let you know when its time to change your string:
Sign 1: String Fray - Now I'm not talking about a few minor frayed strands here and there along the string, this is normal and can be fixed by rubbing some bow wax into the string, no I'm talking about strings that look like a bird has tried building a nest in it. This is a definite sign that strands are going to start breaking on you soon.
Sign 2: Strand breakage - This sign is pretty self explanatory however, I will say that if you have 1 or 2 strands that are broken however the rest of the string is in good condition, you will still be able to shoot as normal, however it is important that you keep an eye out for any further strand breakage. (Use your best judgment here)
Sign 3: Strand separation - This can happen as the string ages, if the bow sits for an extended period of time without being used, or is not waxed and up-kept regularly. What can happen is that the strands begin to look separated and loose and can actually become dry rotted and brittle, this can cause some major issues as the string could snap and cause injury to you as well as damage to your bow.
These are 3 of the most common signs to look out for when determining whether or not you should replace your string. Now a word of caution to you, if your bow is dry fired (fired without an arrow) more often than not you will need to replace the string however this should be determined by an authorized bow technician.

Most bow hunting enthusiasts know that greater distance shooting opportunities will be affected by increased arrow fall. High tech compound bows provide fast arrow velocity, and there is typically very small degrees of fall associated with shots inside 20 yards.
The effect of gravity results in a greater toll on an arrow as the distance approaches 30 and 40 yards. The arrow fall will result in a poor shot if an archer does not correctly approximate the distance and adjust for it. If the range estimation is flawed by plus or minus 5 yards on a true 40 yard shot, a bow hunter can over shoot or under shoot the deer. This possibly could result in a total miss or wounded game that may never be located. For this reason, reproducible arrow positioning closely correlates to exact approximation of range.

Now, take note of where that 40 yard sight pin comes to rest on the target, and you will probably visualize that you would have a clean miss. A slight mistake in distance at longer ranges will either conclude in a bad shot or an injured deer.
I've consistently encountered good results when attempting shots on game within 25 yards. Missed shots or poorly placed arrows that resulted in an unsuccessful attempt all occurred on shots nearer to 30 yards and longer. Shooting chances with game in the 30 to 40 yard range were not attempted without some reservation, and I had no self-assurance beyond of 40 yards. Even though I would practice at that distance confidently on the range, that confidence just wasn't with me in the stand. This was the difference of shooting from marked ranges and guessing distances. Little miscalculations in range from the stand yielded missed shots and dashed confidence.
A bunch of that lack of confidence was gone when I obtained my first archery laser range finder. By the time I would be able to get a distance reading the deer, bring my Matthews Switchback to full draw, and release my arrow, the deer would have often moved and changed their position.

What they do not see, is that kinetic energy is what kills deer, not speed. Yeah, so you're shooting nearly 300fps with a full set up, but do you really think that means that a deer still can't jump your string? Speed is important, very important, but not as important as the kinetic energy you're shooting.
So what is "kinetic energy?" Kinetic energy basically means the amount of penetration your bow is going to produce at a certain arrow velocity. To measure the amount of kinetic energy your bow is shooting, the formula is: speed * speed * arrow weight / 450240. You can see the importance of speed in the formula, but the most under looked aspect in the formula is the arrow weight. IBO recommends you shoot 5 grains of arrow weight for every pound of draw weight, but that is for maximum speed standards and is basically dry firing your bow. You need about 6-8 grains of arrow weight for every pound of draw weight. Yes, this will slow you down a slight bit, about 1fps worth for every 3 grains of arrow weight, but you will gain what is really important: kinetic energy.
There are calculators on the computer that will help you determine your speed and kinetic energy if you do not have access to a chronograph, but the easiest method to determine at home is simply know the IBO standards, which is 30 inches of draw length, 70 pounds of draw weight, and a 350 grain arrow. If your bow does not reach a 30 inch draw or 70 pounds of weight, then use the maximum weight/length your bow comes in and times the draw weight by 5 to determine the total grain arrow used. So if you're using a bow that has an IBO of 335 fps: subtract 10 fps for every inch of draw length lost, subtract 2 fps for every lb of draw weight lost, subtract 1fps for every 3 grains of arrow weight lost, and that should tell your your speed, give or take 5 fps or so.
In example, your bow has an IBO of 335fps, so if your bow is set on 28 inches of draw length, 70 pounds of draw weight, and you're shooting a 427 grain arrow, then your approximate speed is 286 fps and your total kinetic energy is 78 ft/pds of kinetic energy.
Remember to pay a little bit of attention to the kinetic energy your bow is shooting. Don't get so caught up in speed that you lose sight of everything else. Speed is very important, but the total kinetic energy is what you want to look for. Find you a fast bow, put a somewhat heavy arrow on it, and then see how far that arrow penetrates into the target.

Strength and Spine of Carbon Arrows

The shaft and spine of carbon arrows are a very important addition to successful bowhunting. The "shaft" of the arrow is also known as the GPI or "grains per inch" on the bow. If you look in small letters, you'll see something like "7.3 GPI" or "9.5 GPI" or something greater or less. That is the grains per inch of the arrow you're using and has significant affects on the performance and results of your bow.
The smaller the shaft, the faster the bow will be; however, it will also mean the bow will produce less kinetic energy and the result is less penetration. If you take a small gravel and throw it against a fence, it will be quick. Sometimes, even so quick you won't see the gravel moving, but you will only hear a "peck" noise. If you would grab a much bigger rock, it might travel a little slower, but you will hear a much heavier "bang." That is because the heavier the rock, the more kinetic energy produced. Don't get caught up in too much speed. Kinetic energy is very important.
Kinetic energy is probably the most under-looked factor by archers to this day. Everyone is so caught up in how fast the chronograph measures their bow, that they lose the idea on how much penetration and kinetic energy the arrow is producing. In boxing, kinetic energy leads to knock outs, while speed leads to points.
Kinetic energy is measured in pounds per foot. And the formula to finding the kinetic energy your bow is generating is [speed * speed * arrow weight divided by 450240]. That's to say that speed is important for your total kinetic energy produced, but the arrow weight is also important. You want to produce fast speeds with a heavier grain arrow. Most people that are not seeing a lot of kinetic energy is due to lack of arrow weight; rather than lack of speed.
People often mistake the "spine" of the arrow to be the grain. The "spine" is the big number on the arrow often written "500" or "340" or "400" or somewhat. The heavier your draw weight, the lower the "spine" number should be. The spine number is nothing more than the total bend-stiffness ratio. The technique used to determine the "spine" of an arrow is to take a 29 inch arrow, hold it at 28 inches on each end and hold a 1.94 pound weight in the middle of it, the amount of bend determines the stiffness. A heavier draw weight arrow would have a harder landing and more impact, and the result is the need for less bend in the arrow, so that the arrow doesn't break or bend upon impact.
The reason for this is when the arrow is shot, the arrow flexes. The flex of the arrow needs to be consistent in order for the arrow to stay constant within the groups. If your arrow is too weak, it will generally favor the right side while if it is too strong, it will favor the left side. Stay consistent within the spine that you're buying. I would prefer to stick with a 340 spine arrow for 60 pounds and up. For 50 pounds to 60 pounds, I would use a 400 arrow. And for anything below 50 pounds, I would use a 500 spine or 400, depending on how close the weight is to 50.

Proper Draw Weight

All of us have different levels of physical strength. What might seem an easy feat for one person, could be an impossible task for someone else. Form is also a factor when it comes to performing a physical endeavor. If he doesn't have the proper form, the strongest man in the world will drown if he doesn't know how to swim.
Sadly though, the public usually puts physical strength on a pedestal and forsakes the more cerebral approach. Some archery hunters will take the manly approach and draw as much weight as they possibly can. Not only can too much draw weight possibly cost you a deer, it could be hazardous to your health.
MACHO MAN
Ever seen this guy on the archery range? Just as he is about to draw his bow, he aims it to the heavens, spreads his feet into a wrestling stance, and begins to draw back his bow. His lips are pursed and his eyes bug out a little until the cams roll over and he gets into the valley. As he brings his bow on plane at full draw, his body quivers, he aims quickly, and at release, exhales loudly in relief of the pressure.
IS YOUR DRAW WEIGHT TOO MUCH? HERE'S THE TEST..
This guy could be big or small but it's obvious that he is drawing WAY too much weight. Chances are good that he will eventually pull a muscle but chances are even greater that if he goes through those gyrations on the stand, every deer within 100 yards will see him! So how do you know if you are drawing the right weight for your body style and strength level? Here's the test...sit on a chair with both feet flat on the floor. Hook your release and bring your bow arm up on the plane with your target. You are drawing too much weight if you are not able to come to full draw in that position while keeping your pins on the target.
CONCLUSION
You only need about 35 pounds of kinetic energy (KE) for the average whitetail deer and arrow velocity is part of the formula for determining KE. Arrow velocity is partially determined by draw weight. Don't suffer the fool well who is bragging that the draw weight of his bow is set at 82 pounds.....unless he can smoothly come to full draw and hold it there. Then you might want to consider just staying out of his way.

Ever seen this guy on the archery range? Just as he is about to draw his bow, he aims it to the heavens, spreads his feet into a wrestling stance, and begins to draw back his bow. His lips are pursed and his eyes bug out a little until the cams roll over and he gets into the valley. As he brings his bow on plane at full draw, his body quivers, he aims quickly, and at release, exhales loudly in relief of the pressure.
IS YOUR DRAW WEIGHT TOO MUCH? HERE'S THE TEST..
This guy could be big or small but it's obvious that he is drawing WAY too much weight. Chances are good that he will eventually pull a muscle but chances are even greater that if he goes through those gyrations on the stand, every deer within 100 yards will see him! So how do you know if you are drawing the right weight for your body style and strength level? Here's the test...sit on a chair with both feet flat on the floor. Hook your release and bring your bow arm up on the plane with your target. You are drawing too much weight if you are not able to come to full draw in that position while keeping your pins on the target.
CONCLUSION
You only need about 35 pounds of kinetic energy (KE) for the average whitetail deer and arrow velocity is part of the formula for determining KE. Arrow velocity is partially determined by draw weight. Don't suffer the fool well who is bragging that the draw weight of his bow is set at 82 pounds.....unless he can smoothly come to full draw and hold it there. Then you might want to consider just staying out of his way.

Early Season Tactics

Don't you just love those videos on TV where the unsuspecting victim approaches the seemingly normal birthday cake only to be totally surprised when the trap is sprung and it smashes into their face? The birthday person had seen lots of birthday cakes before where nothing out of the ordinary occurred and this cake was approached in a relaxed manner with no thought to a set up.
IT'S A PARTY
In the early archery season, deer are locked into their late summer / early fall feeding patterns. They haven't been harassed at all for many months and for the past several weeks, they have been leaving their nearby bedding area and travelling to the bountiful and easily accessible food source in the back corner of the roadside field.
SURPRISE!!!
But if you've done your preseason scouting, on the opening day of archery season you will be in a stand on the field's edge. If you've used scent control and are playing the wind correctly, our unsuspecting victim should be coming down the trail to the seemingly normal food source. And if you are patient and have been practicing, you should be able to spring your trap.
IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS
Some things to remember though... First, have an exit strategy. If a bunch of deer are feeding in the field you are hunting but the deer you want does not show up on the first night, you need a plan to get out of your stand and out of the area without disturbing the whole herd. You do NOT want to walk through the field and blow them all out of there.
Second, if the wind isn't right, don't hunt that location. Third, it won't take Mr. Big long to realize he's being hunted. If you don't get him on the first or second night, give the location a rest for a while.
Fourth, if the animal you want is not coming to the field until after legal shooting hours have expired, look for a staging area about 50-150 yards from the field. Sometimes bucks will find an elevated location to check out the field during daylight hours before committing to it after dark.
CONCLUSION
I'm not sure which is better to hunt... the first week of archery season when deer are relaxed and in predictable patterns or the pre-rut when calls, scents, and rattling can bring on an extra element of excitement. I will admit that early archery season is something I look forward to each year. The weather is agreeable, I'm excited to be archery hunting again, and the deer are somewhat foreseeable in their movements. Missing the early archery season is a mistake and could cost you the buck of a lifetime.
